Recently, Maersk, CMA CGM, Mediterranean Shipping (MSC) and other leading shipping companies have successively issued notices of surcharge adjustments, involving multiple routes. Maersk will impose a peak season surcharge (PSS) on China to the Middle East and East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania), and an overweight surcharge (HWS) on the India to the United States route; CMA CGM will increase PSS and overweight surcharges (OWS) for the Far East to West Africa and Northern Europe routes respectively. At the same time, due to new environmental regulations in the Mediterranean, a low-sulfur surcharge (US$10-20 per TEU) will be imposed on cargoes from Asia to the Mediterranean from May; MSC imposes a container imbalance surcharge of US$400/box on reefers from Egypt to the Far East/Middle East. In addition, ONE announced that it will impose an ECA surcharge of US$17/TEU on Mediterranean imports and exports starting from May 1. In terms of freight rates, the spot freight rate from Shanghai to Los Angeles rose by 3% month-on-month to US$2,815/40 feet. It is recommended that shippers plan ahead to cope with cost fluctuations.
