Despite widespread and accurate predictions, everyone held their breath before the final blow actually came.

On August 11, the White House announced that Trump had signed an executive order extending the suspension of US tariffs on China for 90 days. Hours later, China released the "Joint Statement of the US-China Stockholm Economic and Trade Talks," also confirming a 90-day suspension of retaliatory tariffs against the US.

A few hours later, China's Ministry of Commerce further announced that it would suspend measures against 17 US companies added to the Unreliable Entity List in April, as well as suspend export controls on 28 US entities. This could be seen as a positive response to the White House announcement.

Since the April announcement of tariffs against the US, China and the US have continued to increase tariffs on each other to a historic high (145%), but quickly reached a "ceasefire" agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, a month later. The Geneva Agreement established a 90-day truce in trade negotiations between China and the United States, originally scheduled to end on August 12. If not extended, tariffs would return to their high levels, bringing Sino-US trade to a virtual standstill.

The two countries held their third round of trade negotiations in Stockholm, Sweden, at the end of July. Following the negotiations, China stated that both sides had agreed to extend the tariff suspension period previously established in May for another 90 days. While the US side expressed similar intentions, their tone was less than firm. Both Treasury Secretary Bensont and Trade Representative Greer stated only that they would bring the agreement back to Washington. Whether to agree to another 90-day extension remains to be determined by President Trump.
